How people are typically represented in a hip-hop magazine:
This shows the how people are typically represented:
Representation
How my magazine represents people from KyleMedia
How social class, age and Gender is represented in my magazine
How social class, age and Gender is represented in my magazine
Age: I have appealed to my target audience of 16-35 year olds which is mainly male dominated, by including artists of the same age range so that they can relate to them .i have also used similar clothing ad costume tha the audience would also wear , or the audience can aspire to be like the artists and use the artist as a fashion icon. The use of bold and capitalised fonts give the magazine a casual and masculine theme which will appeal to the target audience, it also suits the age of my audience because if i used serif fonts then it would convey elegance and sophistication therefore by using sans serif fonts it is more masculine and younger , slightly immature audience. The content of my magazine is suited and aimed at a slightly older audience in which the content that is used is more intellectual. Also as the colour-scheme and facial expressions of the artists connote aggression and anger gives the impression that it is aimed at an older audience as this would be typically associated with the younger innocent audience. Another way I have appealed to my audience is through the use of bold and capitalised text, this is conventional to the hip-hop genre and focuses on an older target audience. For a younger audience you would expect a more formal font style whereas my font style is very informal. The general colour-scheme that I have used which is conventional for a hip-hop magazine also indicates the age range of my audience. In which the colour and mainly dark but vibrant which makes it stand out , this is commonly used with the older audience , as for a younger audience you would typically expect brighter colours. Another way I have represented age is through the content that I have used. The content and language used conveys aggression and violence which isn't associated with a younger, innocent audience. The topics that I cover talk about things such as the struggles in life which the older generation can relate to whereas a younger audience may not understand as they are not at that point in their life yet.
Social class: My target audience are mainly of the lower/ middle class with maybe an exception of ABC1 upper class, and would therefore be more familiar with the 'slang' I have used in my coverlines which is commonly associated with hip-hop.
I have represented my social class through the use of the language and the overall theme of my magazine. As it has a wide range of colours and fonts styles and a range of different images and shot types, i have targeted and appealed to my audience and represents their social class. The language that I have used throughout relates to the social class of my audience, as it is mainly 'slang' then it less likely to target the upper class therefore I am obviously targeting middle/lower class. The clothes that the artists are wearing in the main images are casual and typical to the hip-hop genre, this also indicates the social class as the upper class would dress smart and elegantly whereas this has a more casual style. Also the artist themselves in the magazines are of middle class themselves so therefore the audience of middle/lower class can relate to these artists.
Gender: Gender is represented on my magazine through the use of masculine colour-scheme, font styles and captialised letters. The use of the colour red connotes violence and agression which is typically associated with males, the use of the colour black connotes dominance which is also associated with males . As hip-hop is usually male dominated , i have signified this as my magazine has mainly male artists. Also the use of language is mainly focused on the male target audience as it is conveyed in an confident and aggressive manner which appeals to the target audience of males. As my magazines content and imagery is mainly focused on males then you typically expect the audience to be male dominated. The artists costume/clothing are what you would typically expect to see in the hip-hop industry and is easily recognisable as hip-hop clothing. The clothing is conventionally male which is suited for the male audience. The general topics throughout the magazine are focused around the artists life and their struggles of becoming an artist. In a magazine aimed at girls the topics are usually about make-up, relationships etc. Therefore as there is no content of this sort then it immediately indicates that it is aimed at males. The whole representation of the artists convey them to be aggressive and dominant through the use of their facial expressions and body language this is conventional for the hip-hop genre and it attracts the male audience as they may aspire to be like the artist.
